How to Warm Up Cold Leads on Social Media

It is a great idea to use your social media platforms to generate leads for your business.  But it is not good to be pushy or spammy!  And heaven forbid, do not bug your family and friends who have no interest in what you are doing!

Also, keep in mind that people HATE to be sold but they LOVE to buy!  If they feel like you are trying to sell them something and make them your customer, it’s all over!  But if you do it right, you will be able to warm up your cold leads.

First let’s talk about what you SHOULD NOT DO:

Do not talk about your business or products in your first message—NEVER!

Do not copy and paste your 3-paragraph sales pitch in a DM—NEVER!

Do not copy and paste generic messages without their name—NEVER!  NEVER EVER!

Do not sound like spam, we all HATE spam—NEVER!  NEVER EVER!  NEVER EVER EVER!

Ask yourself, if a stranger tried to spark a conversation with you, what would they need to say to capture your interest?

They would need to spark some curiosity, right?  And they should sound like a real genuine person, right?

So, let’s get back to human basics!  Humans basically love a good compliment!

Here are 3 ways to warm up a cold lead:

1.       Give them a sincere compliment.

2.       Relate to them as a person.

3.       Ask a question.

It is a process.  And yes, it requires all 3 steps!

If you are a single woman, think about it?  Would you want some guy jumping in your inbox selling you on buying his insurance policies and asking you to join his sales team?

Or would you want him to say, “1). I saw your post yesterday about being an entrepreneur and I was impressed.  2). I see you have a daughter, I’m also raising 2 great girls! 3). There is an organic ice cream parlor that they love going to at the Pearl, do you ever go there?

Not spammy, not pushy, and if they have a cute profile—not creepy!

So, let’s look at it from a business perspective. Here’s an example:

“1). Hi Tina, I saw your comment in our Working Moms Facebook Group about the importance of staying at home to raise your kids, I loved your compassion and authority on the subject.  2). As a mom, it resonated with me because I have a 9-year-old girl and she’s the reason I work from home. 3). So, how many children do you have and what do you currently do if you don’t mind me asking?  It’s great to meet you and I look forward to connecting with you.”

Sending a message as a conversation is the whole point of social media!  If everyday you checked your inbox and it was a bunch of spam messages, you wouldn't be checking it as often as you do!

To relate to others and develop conversations, it's a good idea to find ways to relate to them by viewing their social media profile to see if you have any shared hobbies or interests.  Being relatable is the most powerful way to start a conversation and get a response from them.

To wrap this up, how do you spark a conversation with cold leads on social media?  Relate to them!  Use my 3 steps and practice them often and you’ll become a pro at warming up people who would love to hire you for your services or buy from you and maybe even join your team!
